Kehide Wiley is a contemporary artist living in New York city. His work is known all over the world and many would consider him one of the most important and successful black artists of all time. His work is so realistic, it almost looks like a photograph, but, he is a painter.
Kehinde is influenced by Renaissance and Baroque Art. He often copies the poses and props of these classic paintings but instead of showing kings, queens, and other noble figures, he replaces them with young black men. Sometimes he also does celebrity figures and athletes. Often the men he chooses are clothed in street clothes in the fashion of the time. Wiley feels that young, black males are not represented in any art now or in the past. He enjoys placing his subjects in positions of nobility and power. More recently, Wiley has also started using more female subjects for his work.
Wiley chooses bright colors and rich patterns to help to create the sense of nobility he is seeking. You will see that the pattern is placed both behind and in front of the subject.
Assignment:
1. Research Renaissance and Baroque art. Look for two paintings that have interesting poses that you can recreate with your own model.
2. Take really good, in foucs pictures of people in the same poses as the original paintings. Add any props or important articles of clothing that will help your model look exactly like the original painting.
3. Use Brusheezy to look for pattern brushes you can use for the background.
4. Apply the brushes in a grid pattern behind and in front of the subject. THE BRUSHES MUST FOLLOW A PATTERN! Choose a few areas in your photo where you will also add brushes in front of the person. To do this the person needs to be on their own layer. Consider using the masking tool to separate your person.
5. Choose a background color and play with ways to create a sense of lighting. Pay attention to the colors your model wore when choosing the colors of the background and brush.
6. Post the three ORIGINAL paintings on your web page.
7.Post the completed photoshopped images on your webpage. You will have two.
Each of your images should be size 16 x 20, resolution 300
